Doug was a career Public Defender who was respected for his legal expertise in criminal law around the State. He began his career as an Assistant Public Defender in the Polk County Public Defender’s Office in 1975 and served as a Felony Division Chief in the Trial Division and the Chief of the Appellate Division in that office. In 1981, he became the Division Chief of the 32-county Appellate Division in the 2nd Circuit and was elevated to the position of Deputy Public Defender in 1989. In his work, he handled hundreds of criminal appeals, arguing many cases in the Florida Supreme Court and other state appellate courts. In recent years he also served as an appointee of the Florida Supreme Court’s Chief Justice on the Court’s Standard Jury Instruction Committee. He was recently honored with a resolution by the Florida Supreme Court to recognize his years of service. He was known as an articulate, knowledgeable professional in every aspect of his work.
